The rules are different for different parts uf the UK
Scotland Rules from 1st February 2022

• Every home in Scotland must be fitted with "Interlinked" smoke and heat alarms.
• A heat alarm in the kitchen
  
• A smoke alarm in the living room or the room you use most.
• A smoke alarm in every hallway and landing.
• A smoke alarm in a loft or garage conversion.
• All heat & smoke alarms must be "Interlinked".
• A carbon-monoxide alarm is required for every room that has a fuel burning appliance, except if it is used only solely for cooking.
• Alarms can be hard-wired, but must be installed by a qualified electrician
• Alarms can be battery powered, but must be fitted with a 10year tamperproof battery
• All alarms must be changed after 10 years, no matter if they are hard-wired or battery powered
• Heat alarms should comply with BS 5446-2:2003.
• Smoke alarms should comply with BS EN14604:2005.
• Carbon Monoxide alarms should comply with British Kitemark EN 50291-1.

England Rules from 1st October 2022

• All private and public/ social rented properties in England are required to have smoke alarms fitted.
• A smoke alarm must be installed on every story that has a room used for accomodation (Living room, kitchen, study, bedrooms etc)
• A carbon-monoxide alarm is required for every room that has a fuel burning appliance, except if it is used only solely for cooking.
• Alarms can be hard-wired, but must be installed by a qualified electrician
• Alarms can be battery powered, but must be fitted with a 10year tamperproof battery
• All alarms must be changed after 10 years, no matter if they are hard-wired or battery powered
• Heat alarms should comply with BS 5446-2:2003.
• Smoke alarms should comply with BS EN14604:2005.
• Carbon Monoxide alarms should comply with British Kitemark EN 50291-1.

Wales Rules from 1st December 2022

• All private rented properties in Wales are required to have smoke alarms fitted.
• All smoake alarms must be "Interlinked"
• A carbon-monoxide alarm is required for every room that has a fuel burning appliance, except if it is used only solely for cooking.
• Alarms must be hard-wired, and be installed by a qualified electrician
• Landlords must note the manufacturers replace by date codes and change when required
• All alarms must be changed after 10 years, no matter if they are hard-wired or battery powered
• Smoke alarms should comply with BS EN14604:2005.
• Carbon Monoxide alarms should comply with British Kitemark EN 50291-1.
